Cleveland County Conservation District

Helping People Reconnect To Our Environment

The EEPC held our first Teacher Training on the evening of March 6th at Cleveland Elementary in Norman.  We had teachers representing several schools; Eisenhower, Monroe, Jackson, Jefferson, Washington, Madison and Lakeview, and each teacher received staff development points.  We also had four principals in attendence from Washington, Lakeview, Lincoln and Cleveland Elementary Schools.

We discussed Habitats and Kristy Wicker, EEPC Member and Master Naturalists gave a presentation of different types of Habitats which includes your home or classroom. We had three different outdoor activities for the teachers, Fundanas!, Habitat in a Can and Geocaching.  We had a lot of fun and received great feedback from the teachers.  We will be hosting several more teacher's training covering different topics and grade levels in the future.  If you school is interested in hosting one of our teacher's trainings, please contact Chris Ward at 364-7319.

The function of the EEPC is to give assistance to schools or organizations wanting to offer environmental education.  We are working with the University of Oklahoma and the Norman Public School Administration to develop lesson plans that follow the current curriculum requirements.  We are also revising the District's Grassroots Training to develop a teacher training course in environmental education that will give credit hours to teachers for attending.

The Committee is currently collecting information from each school in Norman and their PTA's  in order to determine how best we can serve their needs.  The goal of the EEPC is to provide the following:

  • Network of Mentors (gardeners, chefs, scientists, etc)
  • Grant Database and a How to Write a Grant Proposal Guide
  • Network of Volunteers willing to assist with programs and events
  • Find a Business Partner for your needs (i.e.; money, supplies, tools)
  • Teacher Training
  • Lesson Plans
  • Outdoor Classroom Development & Design
  • Access to Education Trunks
  • Database of available environmental education programs from different agencies and organizations.
  • Ideas, tips for Full School Involvement (recycling programs, Cafeteria composting, environmental announcements)
  • After School activities and clubs
  • Fairs, Earth Days and Event Coordination
  • Database for Environmental Awards, Recognitions and contests (Envirothon, RecycleBowl, Conservation Teacher of the Year).

If you or your school is interested in receiving any assistance from the EEPC, please contact the District office.
